The 2018 International Symposium on Language Service Standardization Successfully Held in Hangzhou


To promote the rapid development of China's language service industry and advance the internationalization and standardization of language services, the International Symposium on Language Service Standardization, hosted by the Standardization Administration of China, was grandly held in Hangzhou from June 16 to 17, 2018. As one of the supporting organizations, Oracle Translation (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. participated in the symposium and undertook the conference hosting and organizational work.

With the strong support and guidance of the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), this symposium was jointly organized by the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), the Translation Service Committee of the Translators Association of China (TAC), and the Hangzhou Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. It also received support and assistance from numerous domestic and international institutions and organizations. A large number of domestic and international experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs in language and terminology technologies were invited to provide an exchange platform for global language service standardization. These experts from home and abroad play a significant role in driving international standardization in the field of "language and terminology."


The symposium consisted of one main forum and four sub-forums. The main forum focused on the themes of "Language Service Standardization and Industry Development" and "Language Service Demand and Quality," and was moderated by Zhu Xianchao, Chairman of Language Bridge (Shanghai) Information Technology Co., Ltd., and Professor Wang Jihui, Director of the MTI Education Center at Peking University. Laurent Romary, Chair of ISO/TC 37; Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China; Monika Popiolek, President of the Polish Association of Translation Companies; and Liu Zhiyang, Researcher at the China National Institute of Standardization, delivered keynote speeches titled "The Impact of Language and Terminology Standardization in Modern Society," "The Development of China's Language Services and Standardization," "A Panoramic Analysis of the European Language Service Industry," and "How Language Services and Standards Can Better Connect the World," respectively.

The four sub-forums focused on the topics of "Domestic and International Translation and Interpreting Standards and Certification Implementation," "Language Resources and Terminology Management, Technical Documentation and User Documentation, and Enterprise Manufacturing and Product Quality," "The Current Status and Development of Translation Technology," and "Roundtable of Chinese and International Experts in Language Service Education" (an international seminar on translation and interpreting education and training). International language service experts, including Klaus-Dirk Schmitz, Chair of the German Terminology Association; Veronica Perez Guarnieri, project leader of the ISO 18841 interpreting standard; Peter Reynolds, President of Kilgray memoQ; Haris N. Ghinos, Managing Partner of ELIT Language Services; and Michael Fritz, CEO of tekom, exchanged views on topics such as improving translation quality through ISO standards, development trends in translation technology, and interpreter training.
