The development of writing is shaped by its era, and the objects or concepts that characters represent also change or even disappear over time. To decipher oracle bone script, one must first understand the original intentions behind the creation of the characters—these interpretations must both correspond to later forms of Chinese characters and align with historical realities. This requires scholars to possess a long-trained foundation in paleography, as well as a thorough familiarity with classical texts, in order to cross-validate their interpretations with transmitted documents. In addition, researchers need to be knowledgeable about bronze inscriptions, Warring States period bamboo slips, and even later scripts such as small seal script and clerical script—all of which are subsequent continuations of the forms found in oracle bone script. Due to the lack of comprehensive and systematic materials on oracle bone script, the overall research effort still faces considerable difficulties.
Oracle bone script is the earliest mature writing system discovered in China to date. It is the origin of Chinese characters and the root of China's outstanding traditional culture. More than 120 years have passed since the first oracle bone fragment was discovered, and its finding holds epoch-making significance in the history of Chinese civilization and even in the development of human civilization.
In oracle bone script research, decipherment (interpretation) and rejoining (piece reconstruction) are widely recognized as key challenges. As times have advanced, traditional research methods have gradually encountered bottlenecks. In recent years, the development of big data and cloud computing has opened up new approaches and methodologies for the study of oracle bone script.
The promotion and application of new technologies such as big data, cloud platforms, and artificial intelligence in the field of oracle bone script research have further expanded the research horizons of oracle bone script.
